Ilmuwan dan peneliti Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce), berusaha membuktikan bahwa perjalanan menembus waktu adalah sesuatu yang memungkinkan.
Usahanya mengubah masa lalu mengalami hambatan ketika sebuah tragedi terjadi. Untuk menguji teorinya, ia menggunakan mesin waktu buatannya yang membawanya 800.000 tahun ke masa depan.
